Interview with Emme Hathcock aka This One Woman: Part Four

Sad to say this is the last part of the series of Q&A with This One Woman, Emme Hathcock. This is only one question, but her answer is so profound. It is not only for an artist, but for anyone embarking on going into business for themselves. Even if you aren’t in business for yourself, this is sound advice. It moved me to the core.

What advice would you give an artisan who is trying to get into the world of hand made, wearable art?
 I’ve made a list of things I’ve learned that I hope will be helpful to others trying to get their art out into the world:
1.  Know who you are creating for and always envision that person when you design.  To think you will appeal to everyone is to set yourself up for failure. Not everyone will appreciate your art and that’s okay.
2.  Stay focused.  Always keep in mind how everything you create will reflect on your brand.
3.  Register your business, gets a sales tax permit, build a website.
4.  Never stop learning. Connect with people in your industry, find mentors, take classes, join groups, subscribe to trade magazines.
5.  Do not compare yourself to anyone else. Comparison will drive you crazy, ruin your self-esteem and dampen your creativity.   Your talent is your gift to the world and only you have your vision and your story.  Live it.
6.  Be prepared for criticism, for people who don’t support you, who don’t believe in you or who don’t get you.  All these things hurt like hell but will they make you stronger. I promise.
8.  Never give up.  The only way you can fail is if you stop trying.  I have counseled a few artists and the question I hear most often is, “how do you find the time…”.  My answer is, “how badly do you want it?”.  As HH  the Dalai Lama said, “Success is measured by how much you had to give up in order achieve it”.
9.   Always. Be. Grateful.  Behave with grace and humility.  Thank everyone who helps you, who encourages you and who compliments you.
10. Pay it forward.  The satisfaction you gain from helping others will make you a better artist and a better person.
And now for my ultimate, and possibly my all time favorite piece of Emme’s. The piece de résistance, the infamous Shattered Mirror Statement Necklace. It’s been featured in 2 fashion shows, editorials, and 2 photo shoots so far. It may very well be her signature piece. I think it embodies everything about This One Woman…Behold:

Interview with Emme Hathcock of This One Woman Jewelry: Part Three

I was itching to ask her about her favorite music, the inspiration behind the esthetic, and her materials. Of course she’s not spilling all the beans on where she gets everything, but I had to try!

What music do you listen to while you create your one- of-a-kind pieces?
Honestly, I can’t listen to music while I design/create because I tend to sing along (and wiggle in my chair) and lose count of where the beads should go within a stitch pattern!  I instead stream movies on my computer because I don’t seem to be bothered by talking and it makes a nice background noise while I’m alone in my studio. Speaking of music though, I do get my jam on in the gym and my playlist includes everything from old school funk (Parliament) to Korn to Amy Winehouse, depending on how much push I need to get me through a routine.
What made you create your jewelry in the aesthetic that it is?
The aesthetic of my jewelry comes partly from my heritage as well as my desire to incorporate ancient bead weaving techniques into contemporary, fashionable jewelry designs. It is not a mainstream way of creating jewelry and I have never seen it done on the level I aspire to, so I decided to give this medium a try.  In college and in my travels I have been exposed to the history and meaning of adornment dating back to antiquity.  Each culture featured bead weaving patterns, from extremely simple to incredibly ornate, all with a purpose behind the design. I was drawn to the extravagant and sometimes elusive details these tiny beads create when woven together.  Beads have helped cultures to tell a story, protect the wearer, represent social status, participate in economic trade, express love to one another or simply act as personal ornamentation.  I love the tactile quality of my jewelry – there is something about the type of beading I do that makes everyone want to touch it.  It is not only pretty to look at, you can also interact with it on some primal level.  There is history behind what I do and it makes me feel a profound sense of shared humanity.
Where do you source your materials?
I source them from several places; gem shows, online, brokers, Etsy, eBay and estate sales and I sometimes repurpose old jewelry into something more modern.

Trendy Tuesday: Backpacks…Yup – I said it!

I’ve always been a big fan of Refinery 29, and I trust their judgement in reporting current trends. This whole backpack thing is starting to grow on me, and right on time, because they just posted the coolest backpacks that they say “will make any outfit look cool” and I can’t wait to add one to my collection…starting with the Materials and Process Sacagawea Carryall 🙂 LOVE! Yummy Monday

Here’s a (very) quick version of a stir fry Pad Thai I made…it’s not really THAT authentic, but it got me over my hankering:

This is how I did it:

Get out two frying pans. One small and one large. Turn both on medium heat.

To the small pan, add a handful of peanuts. Shake the pan every few minutes so they don’t burn, you want to toast them nicely not char them to oblivion.

To the second pan, add some coconut oil – maybe a teaspoon (I don’t measure) and let it get hot. Once it’s shimmering, add about 2 cups of (gasp) frozen stir fry veggies. Cook according to package directions, but I fit requires you to add a sauce packet, don’t do it. We are going to hook it up with our own (ahem, bottled) sauce in a few.

While all that is working, grab a lime, some cilantro, and a jalapeño or Serrano if you have it. Slice the line for squeezing, everyone does it differently, chop the cilantro for garnish, and chop the pepper and add to your cooking veggies. Probably time to move them around also.

Go ahead and take the peanuts off the fire and dump em on a paper towel. Go ahead and chop them when they’re cool enough to handle.

I hope you have some left over rice noodles or spaghetti. I didn’t make an ingredient list to start out with, so I hope you’re reading this THEN beginning to cook. You could use rice also come to think of it.

Ok, so you’ve got your veggies almost done cooking. Get a bottle of orange ginger sauce and pour some over the top. Remember we aren’t making soup, so add a little at a time until you’re satisfied. Then add in your carb – thin spaghetti was what I had on hand – and toss it altogether.

Dump it on a plate and garnish with your cilantro then peanuts and a healthy squeeze of line juice. Take a picture. Post in Instagram.

Then find a quiet place where you won’t be seen devouring this dish. Trust me, no one wants to see that!

This is a recipe you could tweak to have different results, too! I just thought of scrambling an egg into it, adding tofu for some protein or even chicken or something! You could also fry an egg over easy and mix the yolk-ey goodness in with the sauce. Mmmmmm!
